Osteopathic Medicine
Discussion Week 4
Osteopathic medicine is the basic philosophy and scientific principles set by physician Andrew Taylor (1874). What is Osteopathic medicine it’s a complete system of primary health care and principle of holistic medicine. Osteopathy “the interrelationship of the body’s nerves, muscles, bones, and organs.
Todd Alan Bezilla D.O. “The primary goal of Osteopathy medicine is to educate patients while working with them as active participants in their journey to optimal health in body, mind, and spirit.”
The first school of Osteopathic Medicine was founded in 1892 and today standard there are 44,000 Osteopathic physicians with 19 fully accredited college. 64% of the field of Osteopathic medicine practice in primary care areas such as family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/ gynecology, and pediatrics medicine.
Andrew Still experimented with the anatomy of human functions and observed that the disease in the body. That the musculoskeletal imbalance impaired the function of the circulatory system. Still, theorized that if you treat the musculoskeletal it can make harmony in mind well-being and in spirit. He depicts that the one is a whole which scrutinized him in most of the medical field of that time.
The developed philosophy and techniques of osteopathic manipulation by Still’s after becoming disillusioned with his theory. With his practice on his own children during the meningitis epidemic lead to the death in 3 of his children and wife. It wasn’t until 1874 “To find health should be the object of the doctor. Anyone can find disease.”
Still became the first American healer to identify the human immune system and developed natural for imbalance its function. Still believe that allopathic medicine left women subject to needless and harmful surgeries. The treatment made addiction and drug prescript increase throughout the Twentieth Century.
The Foundation of the American school of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri. Was the first of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree. (1892). 1896 the American Association for the Advancement of Osteopathy was founded.

Thank you Erica,
Osteopathy D.O. treatment to the body is fasinating and the hormony technique wasn't view good practices until the Twenthy Century. Andrew Still hard nose practices caused him a lot... but his deciation made way of the musculskeletation manulation to preserve. The practice has lead to 44,000 phsyician in the field of Osteopathy Medicine and accredict collegies. With the treatment of mind body and spirit the practice the body in the subject made large strives.
Thank you Shelley,
The most interesting of the post to me was treatment. The treatment during the turn of the century came from individual organ to the whole body -Holistic healer. Over the years this was unheard of and that fact is what holistic healer treated for well being in the body, mind, and the spirit. With patient information they can find out more of the cause then just diagnosis of the organ and treat of that ailment. Thank you for the post.

Class Discussion
Osteopathy Medicine
What do you think about the history of osteopathic medicine? 1) I think that when osteopathy theorizes began it was turmoil. The age of osteopathy medicine became cases of disasters. A physician in the field had a hard time in publication of their finding to pass on to follow physician’s. When Andrew Taylor set forth the philosophy and sciences for physician… when Andrew Still tried his hand in the field at the pike of the meningitis epidemic, he lost 4 of his family members by his own doctoring.
How do you feel about the fact that the osteopathic movement was often ridiculed and sidelined by mainstream medicine? In the movement of osteopathic medicine treating a patient I feel that it would’ve taken time to stabilize the actual remedies. But with medical advancement it could be well prescribed. In treating existing conditions or even gene trait condition.
Why do you think this seems to happen sometimes with alternative therapies? In the treatment of alternative medicine were examining eastern society medicine and the treatment of the way their therapy work. Alternative medicine works along with the body theory for the fix if you’re massage and acupuncture remedies. But where looking for long term care resolvent.
Can our society learn to balance a healthy skepticism with an open mind when it comes to learning about alternative therapies? If your use to the technique and the philosophy of the orients, you’ll get use to the treatment of how the body reacts. How? Because of the centuries of medicine rituals, the alternative treatment people would still use in their therapy today. What are the dangers of being too closed off to alternative ways of thinking about healing? The condition can come back, and the treatment don’t work to heal the body. What are the dangers of being too open? You can get treated with bad therapy and dangerous diagnosis. Where do you stand on the spectrum? I’ll tread lightly on the matter, but I do use occasional therapy.

Discussion
- According to Dr. Duggar, what is functional medicine? Realistic views and opposing medical study looking at the fabric of the parts of the body and the mechanic of the body. To a system of the organism way of thinking. Divided in vitalism and organism and mechanism. What every we can measure is good and what we can’t don’t exist. How does it differ in philosophy from allopathic medicine? Western based medicine that is what is call the opposing path medicine. In opposing the illness condition of the body. From Osteopathic? Restore functional to the body. Though manipulation like what a regular M.D. would do. Naturopathic? Is to treat condition with natural remedies and principles. Lifestyle and Herbs, vitamins.
- What is the history of functional medicine? Using the best of scientific medicine to see what’s going on. Instead of a drug were going to try something natural. A new take on an old ideal that bridge the gap of ideals.
- What kind of training do functional doctors have? Is a frame work of all types of medicine. If you specialize in the field of dentistry, you’ll bring all types of medical treatment that refers to the mouth.
- What kinds of conditions do functional doctors treat? They run lab works looking for a diseased process. Trying to find disfunction in the body when they are diseases.
- What kinds of assessments do functional doctors do, and what do their treatments involve? How is this different from allopathic treatments? The same? When finding diseases and running labs they but seeing your body is out of control. Functional doctor would create a lifestyle functional change. Creating the 7 functional methods of lifestyle. Eat well drink well Love well, play well, sleep well think well, Habits were going to developed. Looking at the whole pattern of a person, physically spiritually, mentally.
- What is your overall reaction/response to functional medicine? Is it something you think you might pursue for your own health? The whole gut function of functional medicine, and the hormonal system of the body working as a super system. Functional medicine besides treatment is and informational remedy. If your lifestyle has to change in this identified way in this treatment of assessment. It would be one of the 7 goals of assessment. In early holistic form of practice this is a good way of changing a person medically to be fit for a positive lifestyle.

Discussion wrap up
In this chapter of understanding that Osteopathic medicine is healing of the musculoskeletal circular systems of the nervous system. To treat the root causes of a condition even if it’s mental, physical are spiritual.
And that in functional medicine treatment can be used with osteopathic medicine. The treatment of the root cause and diagnosis in the lab with blood work and if patient needs medical life changes. An assessment of body function is made to bring a change in system functions, to make a lifestyle change.
Hello Ashley,
This reminds me more of physical coaching in training camp. Everything is assessment, and even a body mass count is gathered. With functional medicine even the money figure is the same high prices for the best out put of treatment. In sports it's big business to have the best physical capabilities and good health. I can see it bridging over to the medical field of treatment. I would do it for the best body mind and spirit as possible. The major different is possible the blood work up. It might be different in the medical field of health than in sports. Thank you for the post Ashley.
Paulette, excellent discussion and your points are so true. If history would excepted Osteopathic medicine like the eastern philosophy it would make break thoughts. Whenever there is change in the medical field it has to examine because your healing and curing diseases. I love your post holistic medicine does help the body and when we need mind healing? What can we do...Are ancestors in Tao would look at tribes of warriors, strong and healthy women. This gives us mental stabilization and strong foundation to heal. Thank you for the post Paulette.
